On May 24, 2009 Eamonn Duff of the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said that 40,000 food service premises would be the subject of about 50,000 inspections a year.

The Food Authority is cracking down on Food and Food Service Outlets that do not comply with the the food standards code of cleanliness.

He went on to say that whilst department officials expected to uncover kitchen nightmares they did not envisage dishing out 1000 fines to 600 businesses in 10 months. Fines range from $330 to $660 on average per offence and can climb into the thousands for very serious and deliberate breaches.

The code of cleanliness was developed for health and safety reasons to protect the public and ensure adequate hygiene standards across industry. The code refers to such things as the uncleanliness of walls and floors, build up of dirt, grease, grime or other visible matter which is NOT acceptable.
